Located in the heart of San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston was known as the “Birthplace of Military Aviation”. The first military air operations were established here in 1910, and later, the first attempt to use aircraft for medical evacuation occurred on MacArthur Parade Field. During the 1930’s the post served as the center for the evaluation of airborne operations.

Fort Sam Houston dates back to 1845, when the Army first used the Alamo complex as a headquarters and leased buildings in San Antonio to support smaller cavalry posts in Texas an throughout the Southwest.

Fort Sam was officially established in 1876, and is one of the Army’s most historic landmarks. This post is responsible for over 900 buildings and site features which makes Fort Sam Houston eligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, Fort Sam Houston is known as the “Home Army Medicine”, providing space for a major medical treatment facility, medical research, and educational activities, as well as medical training and operations, command support world wide, and Army medical care for soldiers and their families.
